Kegged up that blond ale

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I kegged up that potentially disastrous Blond Ale I was talking about a few weeks ago. Good news is that it tastes pretty good and finished with final gravity of 1.011, but as my hydrometer was lost to the cement gods during the session, I have no idea where it started. Has a nice hint of malt, but is still pretty light tasting. We’ll see how it does when its carbonated in a few days. 🙄

MoreBeer expands empire!

Fermentation Frenzy over in Los Altos, Ca has joined up with MoreBeer this week, so I took a ride down there and checked it out. It’s totally cleaned up and re-vamped with all the MoreBeer gear which is far-out, solid, bitchin and right-on. I now only have to go 20 minutes to get to MooreBeer (versus hour and a half over to Concord)! Phil is still running the show down there, so it’s still gonna be a cool place to get your supplies and hang out. Seems like a big win-win for everyone. I’m a very happy brewer today! 😀

iPhones and brewing

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

In my real life (the one that makes money so I can continue my brew habit) , I work for a software company and thus I’m needlessly into gadgets and such. So, of course, I’ve been watching this whole iPhone thing with some interest (understatement) and it occurred to me – wouldn’t it be cool if you could load ProMash on it? No more printing out your sheets or dragging you computer outside to do your brew! So there you go, my fellow brewers, as soon as the crack the OS for this thing, we’ll figure out how to load ProMash on it and boom! Iron-clad excuse for buying an iPhone. You know you want one. 🙂

The 4th of July Big Brew Report

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

I had a bunch of pals over for a 4th of July bbq and big brew.  For those down with with lingo, that’s when you get a bunch of people over to brew a bunch of beer while drinking a bunch of beer and BBQing a bunch of dead animals.  We had 4 brewers total, not a horrible turn out for my first big brew, and I think we all produced some pretty decent stuff.  Will report on the results in a few weeks.

Back from my trip to Michigan

Things to do in Michigan

  1. New Holland Brewing Co, Holland, Mi.  Awesome brewery.  In fact, one of the best I’ve visited and trust me, I’ve been to a few.  There’s something about their brews that really resonate with my pallet.  I hope the start distributing outside the state soon.  Mad Hatter IPA is simply one of my all time favs.
  2. Bells Brewery – I didn’t make it out to Bells this time, but I highly recommend their beer to anyone.  The brewery is located near Kalamazoo.  Need you another reason to go?

Things not to do in Michigan

  1. Do not take your 17 month old on a 4 1/2 hour plane ride.  This is not specific to anything Michigonian, it’s just a general rule of thumb.  It takes me 4 1/2 hours to get to Michigan from SFO,  So there ya go.
  2. Don’t bother trying to convince Michiganders who are not already inclined that they have some of the best craft breweries in the country.  They just look at you funny and crack another Bud Light.
