Blonds, Greens and Finally Going Diving

Friday, March 21st, 2008

A productive week was had this week. I brewed a blond ale last Sunday (getting ready for spring weather) and decided to use some of the Hallertauer hops that I’d been hording, just for giggles. St. Paddy’s was excellent and I recovered, shockingly, without hangover! And this weekend will be spent going spear fishing with some friends and will hopefully see a good catch and subsequent BBQ! And to top all that, my work got me hooked up with an iPhone! Not to shabby at all. I’d brew this weekend but all my fermenters are already in action. I guess I need more fermenters. 😉

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!!!!!!! -or- My High Holy Holiday

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Happy St. Paddy's day!Every year I take March 17th off. This year is no different. Now it’s no surprise that someone who brews would enjoy St. Patrick’s Day, I’m aware of that, but I host a little do over at O’Reilly’s on Green St. in San Francisco. By “host” of course I mean I show up there at quarter to 9:00AM, and grab a big table so my friends and I can eat breakfast and start our Drinking day. It also happens to be my wife’s birthday, which honestly, I thought was gonna be a deal-breaker at first, but has turned out to be just fine. And by “just fine” I mean she deals with it (read: I take her out the night before for a phat dinner). This year St. Paddy’s falls on a Monday. Thank god! I HATE it when it’s on a weekend. Nothing but a bunch of amateurs out for a drive in a car they can’t handle. Can I get an amen? St. Paddy’s is for everyone, don’t take me for a complete elitist, but from 9:00AM to – I dunno, call it 3:30PM – I don’t want to have to babysit some drunk idiot who can’t handle his/her Guinness. I’m just sayin’. After that, go with god, but leave the morning and early day to the professionals. That’s all I ask. Have a happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

A Broken Hydrometer Weekend

Monday, March 10th, 2008

The good people down at MoreBeer in Los Altos, Ca hold an invitational called the Broken Hydrometer. It is a contest where Phil from MoreBeer selects an unknown series of hops and hands you a 4oz bag worth of them. The only rules are that you must use, in any way you see fit, all 4 ounces worth in your brew. Pretty much anything else goes. So I pondered this for about a week as the hops sat in my freezer, mocking me. I decided to throw caution to the wind and take a chance on the grain bill. Now not wanting to aid any of my fellow contestants, not that any read this blog anyway, but I will post the recipe after I turn in my bottles next month. I will say that the wort I collected from the mash had the very unique flavor that, I hope, will be complimented by any hops that I may have thrown in there and the sample I took as I was running the cooled product into the fermenter definitely had a stand-out flavor that I think will, at a minimum, give the judges a welcome surprise. 😈 Wish me luck!
