The hops are definitely hopping

Here’s a few pics of the hops and how they’re doing. The Cascade is looking good, but the two Willamettes are really going nuts.

Brew weekend coming up!

June 10th, 2008 by Steve Travis

So I haven’t brewed for over a month. Which is both ridiculous and sort of par for the course for this time of year. That doesn’t make it any easier when the taps run dry. So this weekend, I’m going big and doing two days, and 20 gallons! Sadly that’ll last about 3 weeks as soon as my friends sniff out the fact that the taps are flowing again. 😉 Haven’t figured out what I’m brewing yet, but it feels like IPA time to me!

Another Kick-Butt Boonville Beer Fest and a Hop Report

May 19th, 2008 by Steve Travis

Once again, I’m running low on brew and it’s totally my fault. Weekend after weekend we’ve been off doing something so I’ve been unable to brew. However one of those weekends was the 12th Annual Boonville Beer Festival in Boonville, Ca. So I don’t feel too bad about that weekend! In other news, the hops I planted are coming along well. I’ll post some pics of the much bigger plants soon. I’m very pleased with thier progress.

The Hops Have Sprung!

Cacade hop vine Here’s a shot of one of my Cascade vines starting up. 3 of the 4 rhizomes have sprouted over the last week, so here’s to hoping for a great yield! 😀

I’m a hop farmer!

I planted 4 rizomes last week and have been watering them about every other day with great expectations. I have 2 Cascade and 2 Willamette incubating away in the garden. I’m pretty excited to see how these do. If they seem to give a decent yield, I’ll add some Mt. Hood and Centenial next. Screw the shortage I got mine! 🙂

Blonds, Greens and Finally Going Diving

March 21st, 2008 by Steve Travis

A productive week was had this week. I brewed a blond ale last Sunday (getting ready for spring weather) and decided to use some of the Hallertauer hops that I’d been hording, just for giggles. St. Paddy’s was excellent and I recovered, shockingly, without hangover! And this weekend will be spent going spear fishing with some friends and will hopefully see a good catch and subsequent BBQ! And to top all that, my work got me hooked up with an iPhone! Not to shabby at all. I’d brew this weekend but all my fermenters are already in action. I guess I need more fermenters. 😉

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!!!!!!! -or- My High Holy Holiday

March 14th, 2008 by Steve Travis

Happy St. Paddy's day!Every year I take March 17th off. This year is no different. Now it’s no surprise that someone who brews would enjoy St. Patrick’s Day, I’m aware of that, but I host a little do over at O’Reilly’s on Green St. in San Francisco. By “host” of course I mean I show up there at quarter to 9:00AM, and grab a big table so my friends and I can eat breakfast and start our Drinking day. It also happens to be my wife’s birthday, which honestly, I thought was gonna be a deal-breaker at first, but has turned out to be just fine. And by “just fine” I mean she deals with it (read: I take her out the night before for a phat dinner). This year St. Paddy’s falls on a Monday. Thank god! I HATE it when it’s on a weekend. Nothing but a bunch of amateurs out for a drive in a car they can’t handle. Can I get an amen? St. Paddy’s is for everyone, don’t take me for a complete elitist, but from 9:00AM to – I dunno, call it 3:30PM – I don’t want to have to babysit some drunk idiot who can’t handle his/her Guinness. I’m just sayin’. After that, go with god, but leave the morning and early day to the professionals. That’s all I ask. Have a happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!
