Hookie Brew

August 27th, 2007 by Steve Travis

It was my birthday this past weekend and, having been forced to work the weekend prior, I decided to sneak out on Friday and brew! There is something really relaxing about busting out of the office for a session. Having said that, if anyone from my office is reading this – I was totally on my deathbed… really. 😈

Brewed up a Faceplant Amber but made a last minute substitution of Willamette for the Mt. Hood. Just felt like a Willamette kinda day.

Big Brew ][ – the aftermath

August 13th, 2007 by Steve Travis

Here’s the lesson I learned this weekend. As soon as you have a date that gets you a quorum of your brew buddies willing to show up – don’t change that date. I switched from Saturday to Sunday and thus lost one brewer and ended up gaining zero. Soooo, Charlie and I brewed up a good batch each and had a nice time. Charlie brought enough fish tacos for 11 people which was almost enough for the 5 or so folks who happened by the house. 🙂 And I have another 5 gallons of Boogieboard Blond bubblin’ away in the fermenter which is a very good thing!

Big Brew ][

August 8th, 2007 by Steve Travis

Hosting my second “Big Brew” this weekend. I think we’ll have a total of 5 people brewing, so it should be a good time! Good thing too cuz I’m starting to run low in the keggerator. I really need to get ahead of the consumption curve, so I think I’ll brew both Friday and Saturday and again on the following weekend. If I can just get ahead by even one keg (two in the keggerator, one on deck) I’d be doing well. If I could get ahead by two I’d be golden. However I think that would require me to hide from my friends for two weeks as to slow the afore mentioned consumption curve. 😛

Pound it Down Brown a success!

August 1st, 2007 by Steve Travis

The brown ale I cooked up a few weeks ago is on tap and carbonated up nicely. I have a pretty low carbonation on this one to more mimic the English style browns. It has a light start with a quick roasty finish and is clocking in at just about 5.4% abv. I am pleased.

Kegged up that blond ale

July 25th, 2007 by Steve Travis

I kegged up that potentially disastrous Blond Ale I was talking about a few weeks ago. Good news is that it tastes pretty good and finished with final gravity of 1.011, but as my hydrometer was lost to the cement gods during the session, I have no idea where it started. Has a nice hint of malt, but is still pretty light tasting. We’ll see how it does when its carbonated in a few days. 🙄

MoreBeer expands empire!

July 20th, 2007 by Steve Travis

Fermentation Frenzy over in Los Altos, Ca has joined up with MoreBeer this week, so I took a ride down there and checked it out. It’s totally cleaned up and re-vamped with all the MoreBeer gear which is far-out, solid, bitchin and right-on. I now only have to go 20 minutes to get to MooreBeer (versus hour and a half over to Concord)! Phil is still running the show down there, so it’s still gonna be a cool place to get your supplies and hang out. Seems like a big win-win for everyone. I’m a very happy brewer today! 😀

iPhones and brewing

July 19th, 2007 by Steve Travis

In my real life (the one that makes money so I can continue my brew habit) , I work for a software company and thus I’m needlessly into gadgets and such. So, of course, I’ve been watching this whole iPhone thing with some interest (understatement) and it occurred to me – wouldn’t it be cool if you could load ProMash on it? No more printing out your sheets or dragging you computer outside to do your brew! So there you go, my fellow brewers, as soon as the crack the OS for this thing, we’ll figure out how to load ProMash on it and boom! Iron-clad excuse for buying an iPhone. You know you want one. 🙂

The 4th of July Big Brew Report

July 15th, 2007 by Steve Travis

I had a bunch of pals over for a 4th of July bbq and big brew.  For those down with with lingo, that’s when you get a bunch of people over to brew a bunch of beer while drinking a bunch of beer and BBQing a bunch of dead animals.  We had 4 brewers total, not a horrible turn out for my first big brew, and I think we all produced some pretty decent stuff.  Will report on the results in a few weeks.
